A review of Tyler Perry’s book, Higher is Waiting.
When I picked up the book, “Higher is waiting by Tyler Perry,” I was wondering what else would I learn about him. I could almost recite his life story word for word. This is because, I had downloaded and watched, as many videos as I can google, of his interviews and talks.
But the book showed you can never know it all about someone else’s life. There is always much more to what videos show. The book has some deep insights that helps with clarity, precision and direction. It’s a book that every creative ought to read. It provides the right balance for practical living and inspiration to press on.
If I was to pick my top 10 key points or learning points or just moments of insights from the book, they will be as follows:
1. Protect your dreams: be careful with whom you share them. There are dream killers and/ or dream thieves who can infect you with negativity and fear. They don’t usually do it out of malice. They do it because your dreams feel as far away to them as the moon and stars. Your dreams might make them feel small. Sadly, at times, dream killers and/ or dream thieves, can be people we love the most.
2. Taking one step at a time: It is not about the speed or the distance. It’s about the endurance. There is power in staying in the race no matter what obstacles are present. Sometimes we set huge goals for ourselves, which might be tough to reach, and seem hopeless or even impossible. Circumstances in our lives may distract us, we may forget to stop along the way to take note of our small victories. instead of staying in the present, appreciating the gifts of here and now, we get lost in the future. We can get frustrated because we think we are running out of time. We may forget to say, “Thank you, God, for where I’m right now.” Don’t think about the finish line. Enjoy the race. Focus on one step at a time. And lets be grateful for how far we’ve come.
3. Learning in Reverse: Your beginning doesn’t have to dictate your destination. You can learn in reverse. But it takes awareness and consciousness to stop these cycles. As stated by Tyler, it seems his dad’s purpose in life was to kill a child’s dream rather than nurture it. But his own intention is to support his son’s dream, encourage him to explore whatever captivates him, and join in his wonder. This Tyler does by consciously embracing another way of being than the one that may have been imprinted in him through his (unpleasant childhood) experience with his dad.
4. Unlocking the secret of a closed door: Life is like a maze. You enter at one end with the objective to exit somewhere else. As you move long, you might hit dead end and be forced to reconsider your route. Taking another path doesn’t mean you won’t reach your goal. It just mean you need to find another way. Be patient. If you keep moving, and stay open to other turns, alternate routes, and expanded possibilities, you will eventually get to where you want to go. Same maze, same dream, different route.
5. Picturing No Regrets: Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. It’s prudent for everyone of us to let those people we love and care about know they are fully in our hearts. We may not be able to take care of them financially, or be able to provide creature comforts and other stuff, but you can step up with love. Love is enough.
6. Digging deeper: Don’t give up digging. You might be mere inches away. Don’t stop praying until you live the change you’ve been waiting for. Don’t stop exploring, pushing, and focusing, until you deliver the breakthrough. You might hit rock. There will probably be costs, some of the unexpected. But once you get to where God wants you to be, you’ll get it all back and more.
7. Remembering Mamma: Our beloveds aren’t promised to us forever. While you still have the chance, embrace those you love and who love you, hold them dear, tell the, how much they mean to you — don’t keep it to yourself. You never know when God will call them back.
8. Lighting Up the World: If all the big lights go out and it’s pitch-black, and you are the only one with a tiny light, we would see your little light shining, and your light could lead the way. Light up the darkness. Let your light shine.
9. Working with Intention: Even if you can’t do exactly what you want to do, aim for something that’s in the direction of your passion. It could lead to what you are hoping for. Never give up hope that it will. First of all, figure out what your meaningful work might be. You can start by describing yourself using 5 words. Then pay attention to what gives you pleasure during a typical day. Also, keep purpose in your equation. If you want to find meaningful work, don’t focus on only what you love. Think about what you can do to serve the people you love.
10. Staying in the climb: Sometimes in life, dreams are hard to follow. Just like climbing a mountain, you aren’t aware of how high you’re going or if you’re even moving. But every step, even when you can’t see what’s behind you or what’s in front of you, brings you closer to your goal. It’s in the climb. Stay in the climb.
