"Where did you go to?" He growled as he closed the distance between us.
"I went to use the toilet," I replied.
"Why did you leave pitch side without telling anyone?"
"There were no more fans at my end. So no one could, or would have invaded the pitch."
He took a step closer and growled softly, "you don't leave your position without letting someone know."
His eyes were beamed straight into mine. This was not an argument I could win. He was right. I should have told the SIA guy beside me, or at least signalled to him.
"No problem, it won't happen again," I replied.
"Good. Don’t let it repeat itself. Good night." He turned and walked away.
I headed towards the opposite direction.
"Bros, how far na?"
I turned to see who called out to me.
"Hey Felix, Wetin dey?" I responded.
"That supervisor wan beat you ni? See as he close mark you like say him go body slam you.
I laughed out loud. "He just wanted to know why l left the pitch without letting anyone know."
"Even when it was clear to see that there were no spectators at your end."
"But he is right. I should have let the guy beside me know my whereabout."
"Nawa o. Is it that serious?"
"Well, that's what this work demands. So I didn't bother arguing with him. I agreed, and we moved on. After all, we live and learn, and life goes on."
We walked to the office, dropped the tie, the Hi Vest jacket, and signed out.
"Are you also heading to the bus station?" Felix asked as we walked out of the stadium.
"Yes."
"Okay, let me walk with you. I'm not sure I can find my way back there."
We walked in silence for a while.
"So bros, what next?"
"As per?"
"Next shift. I don't have any one until upper weekend. "
"Well, I'm heading to Scotland this Saturday for Beyonce's concert. And next week I will be in London on a 5 day shift at a flier show. After that, it's Coldplay at the Ethiad."
"Wawu! How you take do am? They didn't approve the shifts I booked."
"The truth is, the system is not rigged to favour people like you and me. Now, don't get me wrong, I didn't say the system is against us. But it's not there to favour us."
"So what do I do? How can I get more shifts? Or is it how do I beat the system?"
I smiled. "You don't need to beat the system. Just plug and play."
We entered the station and joined the queue for the bus heading to the City centre.
"Huh. Which one be plug and play?"
"I will explain further once we get on the bus. There are too many eyes and ears around us."
Felix smiled. "You suppose do YouTube video on this thing o. You fit even monetize am."
"Haa, YouTube ke? Is that not why they stopped visa approval for dependants of people on student visa. This one is only on a need to know basis ."
"Hmm. That's true o."
"Like my mentor from afar will always say, when we know better, we do better."
"So we can be better, and God go make our bread get butter."
I smiled. "You don turn poet?"
"Bros, one way no enter market o."
"Na so my brother, whether as a trail blazer or a pathfinder, we move."
Signed
Olumide Holloway (King Olulu).
