"You know you are a flirt right?"
"Me? Flirt? Why do you say that?"
I was in London.
It was the third day of a prestigious flower show.
This time my role was called front of house. Basically, meet and greet, ticket scanner and any other thing the supervisor decided to hit me with.
Day one was quite uneventful. It was my first time as front of house, to meet and greet people who came for the event. It was kind of different and took some getting used to.
Day two was more interesting, I did ticket scanning and I enjoyed the interaction with the customers aka the people that came for the event.
So imagine the disappointment I felt when I was posted to a different entrance as front of house (i.e. meet and greet only) on day three.
My partner for the day, Ahmed (from Pakistan) had worked there the previous day. Let's just say he had nothing cheerful to share about the position.
Thus, it was going to be a boring day unless I did something different that gave me an interaction with the customers.
I decided I had to get people to "see me" and respond to me, either by talking to me, smiling or laughing.
It was pretty simple. So simple, I enjoyed it a lil too much.
"Good morning ladies," I said in a sing song manner with a smile as they walked through the gates towards where I stood with Ahmed, my partner for the day.
"Good morning," the three ladies sang back.
"You’re all look good."
They giggled. "Thank you," they said in unison as they walked away.
I turned to the next set of people walking in. "Good morning ma."
It was a woman that was probably in her late fifties.
She smiled. "Good morning."
"You are looking lovely."
"Thank you. You are such a charming young man."
I smiled. "Do enjoy the show."
She walked away smiling.
I turned back to the gates. "Good morning," I said with a smile.
"Good morning," she replied with a smile. She was wearing a red gown.
"Red looks good on you."
"Aww, thank you. You're looking good as well."
"Thank you so much."
She also walked away smiling.
I turned to the next person. "Good morning sir."
"Good morning," he replied.
"I like your hat."
"Oh, thank you. I just figured I wear it because of the Sun."
"It fits you. Do you enjoy the show."
"I sure will." He nodded, smiled, and patted my shoulder as he walked away.
Okay, to be clear. I said good morning to as many people as possible, male and female. But it was not everyone I complimented.
After about two hours, the number of people coming into the venue started to reduce.
"You know you a flirt, right?"
I turned to stare at Ahmed. "Me? Flirt? Why do you say that?"
"I don't mean it in a bad way. I've just being watching you get the ladies smiling and all. But I also like the fact that, if they're not looking really lovely, you don't compliment them," replied Ahmed.
I laughed. "Well, it's just my way of enjoying the work."
"It's good. I like it. You must be a ladies man."
I showed him my wedding band. "I'm married."
"I know I saw it. But it shows that you know what to say to women."
I laughed again. "My playing days are over."
"Please continue, so I can continue to learn from you."
We both laughed.
I turned to the next person walking towards us.
"Good morning."
"Good morning," she replied.
"You're looking beautiful."
"Aww, thank you." She stopped in front of me, "I bet you say that to everyone."
I smiled. "Only the beautiful ones."
